Excellence Initiative

The Excellence Initiative aims to both promote top-level research and improve the quality of German universities and research institutions, thereby making a significant contribution to strengthening science and research in Germany in the long term, improving its international competitiveness and raising the profile of the top performers in academia and research. The total budget of the initiative will be €1.9 billion for the period 2006 through 2011, which will be split between three lines of funding:
DFG Funding of the Excellence Initiative is provided by the DFG

Graduate School (Graduiertenschule)

The institute is involved in the following graduate school (Graduiertenschule)

AICES Aachen Institute for Advanced Study in Computational Engineering Science (AICES)

Cluster of Excellence (Exzellenzcluster)

The institute is involved in the following cluster of excellence (Exzellenzcluster)

House of Production Integrative Produktionstechnik für Hochlohnländer

Funded Research Projects

Collaborative Research Centres

The institute is involved in three projects within the following two collaborative research centres (Sonderforschungsbereiche):

SFB401 SFB 401: Modulation of flow and fluid-structure interaction at airplane wings
SFB540 SFB 540: Model-based experimental analysis of kinetic phenomena in fluid multi-phase reactive systems

DFG Collaborative research centres are a programme of long-term cooperative research in universities and neighbouring academic research institutions. They are funded by the DFG for periods of three years up to a maximum of fifteen years.

Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg)

The institute is involved in a project within the Research Training Group

DFG A research training group is a university graduate training programme established at a centre of scientific excellence in a specific field. It is designed for a number of PhD students at a single university. The students work on their theses within the framework of a coherent and often interdisciplinary research programme. Funding is provided by the DFG.

Priority Programme (Schwerpunktprogramm)

The institute is involved in a project within the Priority Programme

SPP1253 SPP 1253: Optimization With Partial Differential Equations

DFG A priority programme is a nationwide cooperation between its participating researchers in a research area promising to produce particular scientific gain. Funding is provided by the DFG for a period of six years, divided into several funding periods.

Industrial Project

The institute is involved in a project with GEOPHYSICA Beratungsgesellschaft mbH, a spin-off company from
